Mudroom Storage for Lake Norman Families

A mudroom in a lake family's house is a decontamination zone. Everyone comes in through the garage carrying something wet or sandy, and the room either catches it or the kitchen does. The design is simple once you accept the room's job: a place per person, a place to sit, a place for wet things to drip and finishes that forgive.

One locker per person

Common guidance is 15 to 18 inches of locker width per person — enough for a coat, a bag and a life jacket on a hook. Full-height dividers keep one child's chaos from spreading. Count the people, then count the inches; a hall with 60 inches of wall holds three or four lockers, not five.

A bench you can actually sit on

Seat height around 17 to 19 inches suits most adults; kids manage. Below the bench, open cubbies for shoes dry faster than closed drawers, and a lift-seat adds hidden storage for out-of-season gear.

Hooks at two heights

Hooks the kids can reach get used; hooks they cannot become the floor. A row at adult height and a row at child height inside each locker solves it, and a third row of big hooks for wet towels near the door helps in summer.

Finishes that forgive

Painted or laminate surfaces that wipe clean, a floor that tolerates drips (tile or sealed concrete beats hardwood here) and a mat that can go in the wash. Ask any provider what finish they recommend for a mudroom and why; the answer tells you whether they have built one for a lake family.

Upper storage and the seasonal swap

Closed uppers or an open shelf above the lockers hold the off-season: gloves in July, goggles in January. Baskets labeled by person keep the swap honest.

No dedicated room? Use the wall.

A run of lockers along one wall of the garage-entry hall gives most of the function of a mudroom. If the hall is narrow, shallow lockers (12 to 14 inches deep) with hooks instead of shelves keep the walkway. The garage can take the overflow — paddles, coolers and bikes belong there, not in the lockers.
