Garage Organization Around Lake Norman

Around Lake Norman the garage is where the lake lives in the off-season and where it drips in the on-season. Paddleboards, life jackets, coolers, tubes, fishing gear, bikes and the household overflow compete with two vehicles for the same slab. Organization here is a wall problem: get everything off the floor, onto surfaces that tolerate humidity, and the cars fit again.

Start with the slab

Carolina summers are humid and most garages are unconditioned. Anything made of raw particleboard sitting on concrete wicks moisture and fails. Cabinets should sit on legs or a raised base; shelving should be metal or a moisture-tolerant board with a sealed finish. A wall for the lake gear

Slat-wall or track panels with hooks and brackets hold paddles, life jackets, tubes and bikes at eye level and dry them between weekends. Put the panel on the wall nearest the door you carry gear through, and leave the floor beneath it clear so wet things can drip onto a mat.

Cabinets for what should be hidden

Closed cabinets, raised off the floor, take chemicals, tools, paint and the things that should not be visible or reachable. A run along one wall with a workbench section and task lighting turns a corner into a shop.

Overhead, carefully

Ceiling racks are tempting and useful for the lightest seasonal bins, but load ratings and ceiling framing must be checked, and anything heavy or frequently used belongs on the wall. Keep the garage-door travel path clear.

Vehicles first

Draw the cars in before the storage. Door swings on both vehicles set how deep the wall systems can be; a 24-inch cabinet where a door needs to open is a dent waiting to happen. Many two-car garages end up with storage on one side wall and the back wall only.

The mudroom connection
