Laundry Room Storage That Works

Laundry rooms in Lake Norman-area homes are usually small, upstairs and asked to do three jobs: laundry, a second pantry and a pet or cleaning station. Storage that respects the machines' clearances and gives each job a place makes a small room feel planned.

Clearances before cabinets

Front-loaders need room for their doors; top-loaders need room for their lids; both need room behind for hoses and venting. Get the machine models into the drawing before any cabinet is sized. A counter over front-loaders must clear the machine tops and any pedestals.

Upper cabinets, and a rod between them

Uppers over the machines hold detergent and supplies at eye level. A rod mounted between two upper cabinets, or under a shelf, gives shirts straight from the dryer a place to hang and saves the ironing.

A folding counter

A counter over the machines or along a side wall is the difference between folding in the laundry room and folding on the bed. Laminate is fine; it will see wet things.

A tall cabinet for the rest

The ironing board, the vacuum, the mop and the cleaning supplies want a tall closed cabinet. If the room doubles as a pantry, a second tall cabinet with shallow adjustable shelves takes overflow from the kitchen.

Sorting and pets

Baskets on a low shelf, one per person or one per load type, keep sorting from happening on the floor. A pet station — food bin, leash hooks, a towel shelf — fits under the counter or in the tall cabinet.

Materials

Humidity and the occasional leak argue for moisture-tolerant boards and finishes. Ask any provider what they use in laundry rooms. Layouts by room shape

• Galley (machines on one wall, door at the end): uppers over the machines, a counter across them, a tall cabinet at the far end, hooks behind the door.
• Square room with a window: machines under the window if the plumbing allows, counter and uppers on the side wall, a rod under the uppers.
• Laundry closet in a hall: a single shelf over the machines with a rod beneath, baskets on the shelf, supplies in a nearby cabinet — do not over-build a closet that must close.

Small things that matter

• A pull-out hamper or two if sorting happens here.
• A drying rack that folds against the wall.
• A drip tray under the washer if the room is upstairs.
• Lighting under the uppers so the counter is usable at night.
