Lake Norman Closet Design Ideas

Closet design advice written for a city apartment does not survive a summer on Lake Norman. Here the closet has to absorb guests, wet clothes, seasonal swings and the gear that comes with a boat. These ideas are organized by the problem they solve.

Guest rooms that reset in ten minutes

A guest reach-in with double hang on one side, open shelving with baskets on the other and a luggage shelf up top lets a room turn over between weekends. Leave the hangers empty and the baskets labeled; guests will use them.

A wet-and-dry zone in the primary closet

Lake clothes come off damp. A ventilated shelf, a hamper pull-out and a short rod for swimsuits and cover-ups near the bathroom door keep the rest of the closet dry. If the closet shares a wall with the laundry, this is the section to put there.

Drawers where the dresser was

Most bedrooms around the lake would be roomier without the dresser. Six to eight drawers in the closet, on the end wall so they open into the walkway, hold what the dresser held and free the floor for a bench or nothing at all.

Seasonal rotation built into the layout

Design an upper shelf deep enough for bins and a lower section that can switch between summer and winter without rearranging everything. Adjustable shelving on tight pin spacing makes the twice-a-year swap a five-minute job.

Shoes off the floor

Count the pairs, including boat shoes and boots. Flat shelves in a 30-inch section hold about three to four adult pairs per shelf; boots want a taller opening. A shoe section under the short-hang wall uses space that wire wasted.

Light and mirror

Many walk-ins here have no window. A fixture on a motion switch and a full-length mirror on the inside of the door change how the room feels every morning; budget an electrician if the closet has no circuit.

Keeping the walkway

The ideas above only work if you can stand in the room. Keep 36 inches between facing storage (a common design guideline), even if that means one less wall of system.
